Netflix series “Sandman” Season 2 spotted filming at Durdle Door

“Sandman” season 2 starring Tom Sturridge, was seen shooting at Durdle Door in Dorset last month, shutting down the popular beach for a few days in the middle of the busy tourist season.

During filming, secrecy was a priority and the project was only given a code name and all identifying logos were taken off cameras, crew and transport vehicles as a filming village made camp at the Purbeck spot.

However, Tom Sturridge, who plays Lord Morpheus –was spotted on the sands in his all-black costume and other characters on set were also dressed in the unique style of the fantasy comic book adaptation. This was later confirmed.

Sandman is a Netflix series based on the 1989-1996 comic book from DC Comics, written by Neil Gaiman. The series was developed by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg and is produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television. Like the comic, The Sandman tells the story of Dream/Morpheus, the titular Sandman. The series stars Tom Sturridge as the title character, with Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, and Patton Oswalt in supporting roles. The Sandman premiered on August 5, 2022, with an additional episode premiering on August 19. In November 2022, it was renewed for a second season

Durdle Door, known as one the most beautiful beaches in England is a popular filming location, with films such as “Pirates of the “Caribbean” and “Nanny McPhee;” television shows such and “Doctor Who” and “Far From the Maddening Crowd ;” and music videos such as Tears for Fears “Shout and Billy Ocean’s “Loverboy” taking advantage of it’s lovely shoreline and natural arch.

The beach is part of the Jurassic coast. A shoreline that is 95 miles long and covers two countries. The coastline is of international geographical importance, and was designated England’s first natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001 (alongside other wonders such as America’s Grand Canyon and Australia’s great Barrier Reef).

The natural limestone arch was formed when the power of the waves eroded the rock and forged a hole through the middle. The name Durdle is derived from an old English word ‘thirl,’ which means to pierce, bore or drill.

There was controversy last year over the filming of “Dr. Who”. The Lulworth Estate (property owners) accused the BBC of being “duplicitous and dishonest” over the filming of Jodie Whittaker’s final scene as Doctor Who, The estate gave permission for filming to take place, but said the broadcaster had not been honest in its request. In a statement, the estate said: “When consenting to the use of Durdle Door for an episode of Doctor Who, the BBC decided not to include a proper description of what they intended. “If we had known we would not have agreed, because of the encouragement that this may give to some of our visitors to put themselves in a dangerous position, the consequences of which have been well documented. Tourist have been known to jump off the arch into the ocean, which is a safety issue.
